Electrical transformers

Filtering electrical transformers

The direct current output of an electrical transformer is choppy and will need filtering and regulating before it can be used in most electronic appliances. "Filtering" a direct current requires the current to be smoothed out with electronic circuits to make it stable.

A switch mode power supply relies on electronic circuitry to lower the input power supply and filter the resulting DC power into a stable electrical current. Switch mode power has electronics that converts electricity with better efficiency than laminated transformers.

The Switch mode power unit is lighter than a laminated transformer of the same power rating.

Sufficient power is available for the highest rated N.B.P heater plus additional reserve power for situations that require a longer power lead to operate a small heater.
